Pets could be soon be on the 'no' list for parks in the Town of North

Town officials say the ban is necessary because pet owners are not cleaning up after their pets.

NORTH, S.C. — The town of North is considering a ban on animals at its local parks."

“Back here four weeks ago people had horses here in the park. The horses had mess all about out there and I’m the one who had to come out there and clean all this mess up," said North Mayor Pro Tem Jeffrey Washington.

Washington oversees and maintains the town's parks.

Washington says the ban is necessary because there are already rules in place prohibiting animals at the park without a leash and telling people to clean up after their pets.

However, he says residents haven't been following those rules.

“People coming out here letting the dogs run all up on the picnic tables because dogs slobbering. People eat off them tables," said Washington.

Resident Tyrone Carter has lived in town for 20 years and frequents Drew Owen park

According to Washington, this park is where most of the town's pet owners are bringing their animals.

“Bad things happen sometimes when dogs get off their leash," said Carter.

Carter says he understands the need for the proposed ban.

“If that’s where it’s leading or heading, I could understand that. Keep the park clean," he said.

The ordinance needs three readings in order to be approved.

City officials say the hope is to implement the ban this summer.
