COLUMBIA, S.C. — Richland County deputies say they've charged a 17-year-old girl with punching her teacher
The student is charged with assault and battery.
Officers say around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, the school resource officer at Westwood High School was contacted by a school administrator for an assault that had just occurred.
Deputies say from what they've been told, the teacher has taken the student to the hallway to have a conversation about her cursing at her in the classroom. During their discussion, officers say the student punched the teacher in the face with a closed fist.
The teacher had redness and swelling in the eye and jaw area.
The teacher was treated by the school nurse and the student was removed from the classroom.
The student was charged and released to her parents.
