Blythewood voters will have an extra question on the ballot: What to know

The vote could change the format of the town council.

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. — When residents in Blythewood head out to cast their vote on Nov. 7, they'll be voting for mayor and two council seats, but that's not all. They'll also have one question to vote on, which could change representation on town council.

“I’ll read the question that will be on the ballot: Shall the Town of Blythewood change the method by which each Town Council person is elected from an at-large method of election to a method of election where each Town Council person would be elected from single-member voting districts, excluding the election of the mayor?” Blythewood Town Administrator Carroll Williamson said.

Williamson says council voted to put this question on the ballot this year.

The town currently uses the at-large method.

“At-large means that all of the voters vote for each council seat, just as they do for the mayor seat," Williamson said. "That is the current method now.”

“Single-member voting district means that each council seat has its own geographical district that only the voters that live in that district vote for the candidates running for that seat,” Williamson said.

If approved, the new voting method would in place for the 2025 general election, according to Williamson.
