Pres. Biden, other dignitaries arrive in Atlanta for Rosalynn Carter's memorial service

The service will be held this afternoon at Emory.

ATLANTA — A second day of observances in honor of Rosalynn Carter on Tuesday will be highlighted by a tribute service this afternoon at which family and dignitaries alike will pay their respects to the former first lady and trailblazing mental health and caregiver advocate.

Rosalynn Carter passed away at 96 years old on Nov. 19. Her remains traveled along with a family motorcade to Atlanta on Monday, where a repose service was held at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum.

President Carter, along with other presidents, first ladies, and national and local officials and dignitaries will all be present at Tuesday's service, before the family returns to Plain Wednesday for a private funeral.

Here's what you need to know about everything that's planned for the Atlanta ceremony:

Time and place

The service is to be held at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, which is at Emory University off North Decatur Road.

A departure ceremony from the Carter Center will take place at 11:30 a.m.

The tribute service is 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m.

Traffic situation

According to a post from Emory University on X, formally known as Twitter, the following roads will be impacted, and closures are set to begin at 4 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m.

  • North Decatur Road (Clifton Rd. to Emory Village)
  • Fishburne Drive and Lane
  • Kilgo Circle
  • Mizell Bridge
  • Dowman Drive entrance to campus

Additional closures will occur with President Joe Biden's motorcade traveling to the ceremony along I-75 South from Dobbins Air Force Base, as well as the president's return along I-75 North after the conclusion of the ceremony.

The interstate closures can be expected sometime around 11 a.m. to noon for when President Biden travels south to the ceremony, and sometime between 2::30-4 p.m. when he travels back north to leave Atlanta.

Schools affected

Both the DeKalb and Atlanta school systems have announced that bus routes will be affected by the road closures. Here are their schools they said will be affected.

DeKalb County School District:

  • Druid Hills High
  • Druid Hills Middle
  • Fernbank Elementary
  • Briar Vista Elementary

Atlanta Public Schools:

  • Mary Lin Elementary
  • Morningside Elementary
  • Hope-Hill Elementary
  • Springdale Park Elementary
  • Virginia-Highland Elementary
  • David T. Howard Middle
  • Midtown High
