App State student, football player passes away

The university said no foul play is suspected, and no danger was ever present on campus.

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University is mourning the recent death of a student-athlete this week.

The university confirmed on April 30 that John "Jack" Murphy, a member of the Mountaineers football team, passed away on April 26. App State said it is respecting his family's wishes and is providing support as asked for. Head football coach Shawn Clark shared a post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, memorializing Murphy.

Murphy was an offensive lineman for the Mountaineers. ESPN notes he played at Marshall University for three years before transferring to App State.
