Weather delays and venue changes don't deter the Camden boys tennis team from a state title

The Bulldogs captured their second consecutive 3A state championship although this effort was one of the most challenging championship Saturdays in recent memory.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Camden and Daniel squared off Saturday shortly after 12 pm for the 3A state tennis championship.

The match started in Florence but was completed in Columbia due to numerous weather delays.

The Bulldogs and Lions started their match at the Eddie Floyd Tennis Center in Florence. But as Camden was on its way to a dominating win by taking the first set of numerous matches, rain and lightning rolled through the area.

The decision was made to move the match to the Camden Tennis Center located near Camden High School but also an hour or so close to both respective high schools.

With an army of volunteers working to dry the courts from previous rain, the match was on the verge of resuming when another system rolled through, putting moisture on the playing surface and causing another delay.

The decision was made to move the match to the courts at Dreher High School which was more than willing to help accommodate the two teams.

Nearly six hours after the first serve in Florence, Camden would secure its second consecutive state championship with a 4-0 win over Daniel. The doubles team of Robert Jenkins and Harris Younghans would give the Bulldogs to clinching point. Camden was on its way to winning the other two singles matches but drops of rain would make the courts on the verge of being unplayable, thus the official 4-0 final score of the match.

This marks the second consecutive 3A state championship for the Camden boys tennis team.
