They call her 'She-Hulk' and she's the best kept secret in MMA

Local mixed martial arts fighter Laneisha 'She-Hulk' Vinson is breaking barriers for woman in the world of MMA fighting.

She's a wife, mother of two daughters, a correctional officer, a world champion and she goes by "She-Hulk."

LaNeisha "She-Hulk" Vinson is paving the way for woman in mixed martial arts and she is just getting started.

In November, LaNeisha became the first amateur from the US to win the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation and World MMA Association unified championship and gold medal.

LaNeisha is also the first female and first African-American women to be a world champion in world IMMAF championships.

What stands out is that she did that by winning four matches in four days all by knockout after taking year and a half off from the sport.

"It's my opponent and me. That's all I see in the cage. It's just us. Either you're going to go or I'm going to go," LaNeisha said.

The Lower Richland High School product has been doing mixed martial arts for three years.. Before that she was really into boxing. After a month of the gloves she got into MMA and has had major success early in her career with a 9-5 record. Of her 9 wins five are by knockout.

There are only a few black female fighters in mixed martial arts. Angela Overkill Hill was the first to sign to UFC in 2014. Since then there haven't been any to hit the UFC ranks. So it's rare to see what the Lower Richland product is doing even an the amateur level. She's aware of her historic success and wants to be an example for women.

"I would try to get any female, especially any African-American to definitely take the opportunity to go into MMA. Instead of getting in trouble in the streets risking your life and going to jail I suggest coming into the gym. If I can be a role model to any woman I'd do it."

LaNeisha trains just about every day of the week, works 12 hour shifts as a Richland County corrections officer, she can't accomplish these things without her support system.

"My mother and husband play a part in it. They'll watch my daughters for me when I go to the gym," LaNeisha said. "I work 12 hours at the prison so when I get off work I come straight to the gym and work out."

Her husband James is a big Marvel movie fan and LaNeisha loved the Incredible Hulk character. She says she relates to the fact that there's no stopping the Hulk when he gets mad and that 's what she sees in herself when she steps in the ring. A hulk.

With the power, raw talent and poise that she has, her coach, Miles Hacking, thinks we'll be hearing the name "She-Hulk" name a lot.

"I think at this time next year you'll be looking at her with a major pro contract to be honest. She has the work ethic, she has the story and she's had the success at an early stage."

LaNeisha will have a few events next year before gearing up to defend her world title and she hopes to sign a pro contract by the end of 2019.
