Lexington 19-year-old dies after being struck by vehicle near USC campus

19-year-old Hudson Schirra of Lexington was killed in the accident, according to officials.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Columbia Police say one person has died following a crash near the University of South Carolina overnight.

19-year-old Hudson Schirra of Lexington was killed in the accident, according to the Richland County Coroner's Office.

Police said the crash happened at the intersection of Blossom and Bull streets. Schirra was hit by a vehicle and died at the scene. The department said investigators believe he was in the road unlawfully.

The Richland County Coroner's Office hasn't publicly released the victim's name, but the University of South Carolina confirmed to News19 that he was not a student there.

Following the death, Columbia Police urged pedestrians to use crosswalks, remain alert, and wait for traffic signs to designate when it is safe to cross a roadway. The department also stressed people should never walk or run into traffic.
