NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — The Newberry County Sheriff's Office is warning drivers that it is "almost impossible to get to Columbia" right now due to a traffic accident on I-26.

The sheriff's office said the crash happened on the eastbound side of I-26 near mile marker 89 between exits to Pomaria and Chapin and involved multiple tractor-trailers.

"Most alternate routes are clogged with traffic," the sheriff's office said. "Pack your patience."

Maps provided by the South Carolina Department of Transportation also show another crash roughly two miles west of exit 97 to Broad River Road.

Traffic cameras show eastbound traffic backups along the interstate and heavy congestion on parts of Chapin and Broad River roads.

Drivers should seek alternate routes if possible.
