Charlotte church gives away $10,000 in gas Saturday

Kingdom City Church's Gas on God event saw plenty of gasoline get into fuel tanks.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte church gave back to the community with free gas this weekend, announcing a plan to donate up to $10,000 for drivers.

Kingdom City Church's "Gas on God" was a massive giveaway of $10,000 in gas Saturday. The event ran from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Mobil gas station at 3814 Brookshire Blvd in Charlotte, just off Interstate 85. In addition to free gas, Kingdom City Church offered drive-up prayer, shopping gift cards, and encouragement to those who need it.

"Jesus did not just minister to people spiritually but he fed them naturally. Right now, the food is gas. So we’re doing everything we can to be a blessing to the community," said Pastor Brian Carn, Jr.

Volunteers were on hand to keep drivers motivated and positive. Some people waited for up to hours to fill up their tank.

"All this stuff going on in the world so, we’re trying to make sure everybody got gas and everything, food, whatever. There’s a shortage of everything so we’re trying to be a blessing to the people," said Angela Ashley, one of the volunteers.

"We got to get out here. People are hurting. People have situations. One man literally pushed his car up here, was out of gas. Another lady came and said I don’t need gas but I need prayer," said Carn.

Carn said in a press release that it's imperative for the church to give back to the community with things we take for granted, like a tank of gas

According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of gasoline in North Carolina is $4.18. In South Carolina, it's $4.07. This is the highest gas prices have been in the Carolinas since 2008. With gas prices hitting record highs across the country, lawmakers have been considering "gas tax holidays" as a way to immediately reduce prices at the pump.
