Man killed after tractor-trailer overturns outside Summerton identified

Trooper Ridgeway said the South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.

CLARENDON COUNTY, S.C. — A Sumter man has died following a Thursday afternoon crash in Clarendon County.

According to Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened just before 6 p.m. on U.S. 301 (St. Paul Road) near Liberty Hill Road, just under two miles outside of Summerton.

Ridgeway said the crash occurred when a northbound 2004 Freightliner tractor-trailer attempted to turn left onto Liberty Hill Church Road and overturned on the passenger side. 

Ridgeway said the tractor-trailer driver was taken by emergency medical services personnel to McLeod Health Clarendon Hospital. The passenger, identified as 47-year-old Angel Albiter Hernandez, died at the scene, according to Clarendon County Coroner Jacqueline Blackwell.

Ridgeway said the South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.
