Multiple USC students injured in bus crash in Mississippi

Authorities said two people, including the driver, were taken from the crash scene by helicopter with serious injuries.

HANCOCK COUNTY, Miss — Authorities in Mississippi are investigating a crash involving a charter bus that injured multiple University of South Carolina (USC) students.

According to a spokesperson for the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 3 p.m. on I-10 near mile marker 13 in Hancock County. Officials said no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

According to troopers, the bus collided with a concrete barrier, which set the crash in motion.

There were 11 people injured out of the 56 people on the bus. Of those 11, nine were transported by ambulance and two by helicopter with serious injuries. One of the patients taken by air was the driver, who was ejected in the crash. The other was a student. The driver and that student were listed in critical condition.

The remaining students were taken by a Bay St. Louis Public School bus to a nearby school, where they got further transportation.

A spokesperson for the University of South Carolina confirmed that the accident involved a bus carrying USC fraternity members on their way to Louisiana.

"The University of South Carolina was informed tonight of an accident in Mississippi involving a charter bus carrying USC fraternity members and their guests traveling to an event in New Orleans," the school said. "USC is working closely with local authorities on the scene to obtain updates on our students and to assist in whatever capacity we can.

"Our thoughts go out to the students involved in the accident and those affected by it," USC added.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as they become available.
