IRMO, S.C. — One person died in a two-vehicle crash on a highly trafficked Irmo route on Thursday night, police say.

The Irmo Police Department said the crash happened around 10:20 p.m. in the 1300 block of Lake Murray Boulevard. Police said the drivers of both vehicles were taken to Prisma Health Richland Hospital by emergency medical services. One of the drivers died from their injuries on Friday morning, police said.

The Lexington County Coroner's Office identified the deceased as 34-year-old Jennifer Brooke Wingate of Columbia. The coroner's office said Wingate was struck from behind.  Multiple witness statements and surveillance video from nearby businesses led to the arrest of 31-year-old Chelsie B. Pittman of Columbia on charges of felony driving under the influence, resulting in death, habitual offender causing death when license canceled, suspended or revoked, and driving under suspension third or subsequent offense.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol's Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is assisting in the crash investigation.
