Pedestrian dead in Richland County hit-and-run

Authorities said the crash happened on Middle Street, north of Columbia.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities say one person has died following a crash involving a pedestrian and a vehicle that left the scene in Richland County.

According to Master Trooper William Bennett with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 8:40 a.m. on Wednesday. Investigators said they believe an unknown vehicle was traveling north on Middle Street roughly two miles north of Columbia when it struck a pedestrian who was also walking north.

Bennett said the vehicle then left the scene. The pedestrian, who hasn't yet been publicly identified by the Richland County Coroner's Office, died.

Bennett said the South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.
