SCHP: Pedestrian killed after exiting vehicle, running from police onto I-26

The deceased was hit by a car while running on the interstate, authorities say.

LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — A pedestrian who was allegedly attempting to escape police has died after running onto a South Carolina interstate and being hit by a car.

Master Trooper Gary Miller with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 11:30 p.m. on Interstate 26 near mile marker 114. Miller said the deceased was attempting to elude Cayce Police when he exited his vehicle on I-26 westbound. He was hit by a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu heading east on the interstate.

Cayce Police issued a statement that said the pursuit began when a driver was allegedly driving the wrong way on Airport Boulevard with its high beams on. The department said officers attempted to stop the vehicle and began pursuing it. Police said they noticed what they believed were drugs being thrown out of the window.

At some point, police said the driver stopped on I-26 and was hit while attempting to run across it. Police said they attempted "all life-saving measures" after the crash.

Trooper Miller said the Lexington County Coroner's Office would release the pedestrian's identity.
