COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Irmo Fire District is warning drivers along St. Andrews Road to avoid the area after a freight train struck a car on Thursday morning.

Fire officials said the crash happened shortly after 8 a.m. when a disoriented driver attempted to turn from St. Andrews Road onto nearby Leisure Lane. Authorities said the vehicle turned onto the railroad tracks instead and was pushed about a quarter mile down the track by a CSX freight train. Neither the driver nor the train crew were injured, officials said.

The fire department said it expects the road to reopen around 11:30 a.m. However, drivers should find an alternate route until then.
