Early morning storms cause Fairfield County school delays, damage in Midlands

Severe thunderstorms moving through South Carolina overnight affect Thursday morning activities

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Severe storms moving through the state overnight has caused some trouble Thursday morning.

Out of an abundance of caution, Fairfield County School District is on a two-hour delay. Students and staff should report two hours later as there are unconfirmed reports of tornado damage in the Ridgeway area. Trees are down and there have been areas of power outages reported. There was a tornado warning issued for that area earlier this morning.

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office is also reporting damage from overnight winds. Crews are working to clean up downed trees in roadways on Lachicotte Road in Lugoff, Smyrna Road/Ashley Creek Drive in Elgin, Flat Rock Road in Camden and Boykin Road in Rembert.

And in Sumter County, Sumter Police are asking motorists in the Pinewood Road and Oakland Avenue area to use caution as traffic signals are out following a vehicle crash. Police expect the signals to be out most of the day but stop signs and cones are in place and the intersection should be treated as a four-way stop.

Power outages have been reported in Anderson, Greenwood, Newberry, Fairfield, Kershaw, Sumter, Lee, and Chesterfield counties. As of 7:30 a.m., there were 34,800 customers without power across South Carolina.

The storms have also delayed the start of the Minn Kota Bassmaster Elite at Lake Murray. Instead of commencing Thursday morning, the complete field will now compete on Friday and Saturday before the top finishers advance to the finals on Sunday and Monday.

As this front continues to move through the state, today's weather forecast is for scattered showers and thunderstorms. Breezy. Low 72° High 88°
