Icy Friday afternoon brings a hailstorm, 15-degree drop in 30 minutes

The hail brought a significant cooldown on Friday.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Ice fell, and temperatures plummeted in the South Carolina Midlands on Friday as a storm brought hail and an even bigger surprise for residents.

Over about 30 minutes, parts of the Columbia area and beyond received hail and a temperature drop of about 15 degrees. Residents shared photos and videos of hail covering the ground and even hitting their vehicles. Columbia dropped from about 72 degrees to about 55 during the storm.

The surprising weather spectacle accompanied a line of fast-moving storms that pushed through the area before moving into portions of western Sumter County and parts of Calhoun County and Clarendon counties. In general, residents saw hail that reached pea size, though there were a few reports of slightly larger ice.

While the hail is mainly gone, the temperature drop that followed it signals some chilly lows that will stick around for a few days.

The temperature is expected to hit the low 40s on Saturday morning, with highs reaching the lower 60s during the day. Sunday is expected to dip even colder, with a low in the lower 30s and highs in the upper 50s. Temperatures will begin to warm up again on Monday and continue to rise through most of the week.
