How meteorologists use Pi

Happy Pi Day! March 14 is Pi Day worldwide, honoring the mathematical constant.

COLUMBIA, S.C. —  In meteorology, Pi plays an important role.

There are several applications of the constant, including calculating the circumference and area of weather systems, such as hurricanes.

For example, when calculating the area of a hurricane, meteorologists can use the formula A = pi*r^2, where A represents the area and R is the radius of the circle.

This formula can estimate the extent of the system's influence on surrounding areas. The result is more accurate forecasts and warnings.
