Scattered showers and storms possible today

The chance of rain decreases Tuesday, but temperatures will increase.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Throughout the start of this week, there will be a few disturbances that will cross South Carolina, increasing the likelihood of showers and thunderstorms. The middle of the week is predicted to be quiet, with the likelihood of showers and thunderstorms increasing by Thursday. Expect temperatures to be generally above average throughout the rest of the week; next weekend should see temperatures that are close to or slightly below average under mainly sunny skies.

Sunday was wet in the morning and warm in the afternoon, with a few stray showers and storms. The Columbia airport reported over 3” of rain Sunday. The high temperature Sunday afternoon in Columbia was 86 degrees.

There will be a chance for hit-or-miss showers and storms this afternoon and this evening. Just like the last couple of days, it will not rain all day, but there will be at least a chance for rain through most of the day. Highs will be in the lower to middle 80s.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy. An isolated shower or storm will be possible during the heat of the day, but the rain chances are small. High temperatures will return to the upper 80s and lower 90s both days.

It looks like the best time for strong to maybe severe storms is Thursday and Thursday night as a cold front approaches the area. The Storm Prediction Center does have South Carolina at risk of severe weather for Thursday, but the details will have to be ironed out.

On Friday morning, the front is expected to enter the area. Later on Friday evening, it is expected to pass through and come to a stop south of the Midlands. Before the front pushes deeper moisture south and better dynamics swing through, there should still be some shower and storm activity early in the day on Friday. Then, from Friday night into the weekend, it gets cooler and drier.
