Canadian wildfires are still burning

Canada continues to battle devastating wildfires, with over 800 fires still burning.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Since April, flames have consumed over 30 million acres of Canadian land. Impacts don't stop at the fire's edge. Smoke and ash traveled down the East Coast this week, bringing unhealthy air quality as far as South Florida.

Hazy skies are more than just an inconvenience. Fine particulate matter, particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, is present in the smoke. These particles are easily inhaled and can penetrate deep into the respiratory system.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports exposure can cause coughing, throat irritation, and difficulty breathing. For vulnerable individuals, it can even result in hospital admissions. Over the long term, chronic respiratory diseases and cardiovascular problems become more likely.

Canada's wildfire season typically ends in October, but unfortunately, the end does not seem near right now. Thankfully, our skies began to clear mid-week in the Midlands, and our air quality is considered safe.
