Stargazing opportunities open 2022 in the Midlands

Cloudy weather ends the week but clear skies make for great stargazing this weekend and next week.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — If you wanted to get out and view the stars the next few days you might be a little bit disappointed; wait for the weekend though and we have some really exciting things to take a look at!

Let's start off with the weather forecast. Through the end of the work week we are expecting plenty of cloud cover but, thanks to a cold front on Sunday, we see much clearer conditions as we go into the beginning of next week.

So, once we do see those clearer nights we have a couple things that are worth looking for. The first will be the Quadrantid meteor shower which will be visible Sunday night. This isn't a terribly impressive meteor shower but it does have the chance to really over-perform so it is worth mentioning. The meteor shower itself peaks for about 6 hours and could occur on Monday (this space debris is very hard to forecast) right now Sunday night remains the best bet though.

For a bit of an easier target to pick out in the night sky, the constellation Orion will be visible in the eastern sky each night. The constellation appears high enough in the sky and is large enough to easily be viewed!

If you want to see something man-made in the night sky well, we have that too this week. While there are no International Space Station passes this week, there is a pass of the new Chinese Space Station (Tiangong). The space station will make a pass around 5:45 AM on Monday morning and should be easily visible from the south to east sky. Make sure to look for a bright dot quickly moving across the sky!
