Tropical Storm Cristobal named in the Gulf of Mexico

This is the earliest third named storm on record in the Atlantic hurricane basin.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The third named storm of the season, Tropical Storm Cristobal, has officially formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.

As of 12:15 pm Tuesday afternoon, the storm has winds of 40 miles per hour and is crawling to the southwest at 3 miles per hour.

Deadly flooding has already occured in parts of Central America from this storm, and more heavy rainfall is expected over the next few days.

Tropical storm warnings have been issued for some areas on the coast of Mexico.

The official forecast track from the National Hurricane Center has the storm staying close to the Mexican coast over the next few days, before moving north into the Gulf of Mexico.

Currently, there are no forecast impacts from this storm for the United States. All areas along the Gulf coast should continue to monitor the progress of this storm for any changes. 

This is the earliest third named storm on record in the Atlantic hurricane basin. The storm follows both Tropical Storms Arthur and Bertha, both of which formed earlier in May.
