SC Man Makes Williams-Brice Stadium Out of Legos

It's 42 inches wide by 42 inches long, stands 2 feet high, and looks pretty close to the real thing that stands between Bluff and Shop Roads in Columbia.

Charleston, SC (WLTX) - A South Carolina man has made his own model of the University of South Carolina's Williams-Brice Stadium, all out of Legos.

David Robinson said he and his teenage son have been working on the project since March. Now, they've got a replica that's 42 inches by 42 inches and is about two feet high.

Robinson says he's was born and raised a Gamecock fan He also happened to like a certain brain of popular building blocks.

"As a kid, I kind of played with Legos, and built little stadiums," he explained.

But he says his son is really into Legos, far more than he ever was. And this year, they got the idea to start making a miniature version of the Gamecocks' home field.

So they began gathering up random Lego pieces for the project, even going through family member's old supplies of the toys. But they soon discovered that wasn't going to be enough.

"I quickly realized I was going to need a lot more," he said. "It was quite the project."

He then began buying parts from a specialized website. He'd make an order, add to the stadium, but then go back and make another order when he needed more.

Some of the problem was that he needed very specialized pieces to pull off the look of the iconic structure.

"Ramps were hard because they were hard and round," he said.

In all, it took over 5,000 pieces to create it.

They assembled their project on a large piece of plywood. And while the finished project looks great, it does present a challenge.

"It's too big to fit through a door," Robinson said. "So it stays where it is right now."

Eventually, though, he hopes to find a way to move it into another room.

The project's may not be quite done either: he said they can always add to it. For now, though, he and his son have something nice to enjoy.

"It was a lot of fun to do."
