Richland County Sheriff's Department investigating death of female detainee at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center

The inmate was found dead by corrections officers around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Richland County deputies are investigating the death of a 22-year-old woman in custody at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

According to the Richland County Sheriff's Department, corrections officers found the inmate unresponsive around 10:30 p.m. Saturday. The county, which operates the facility, said the woman did not have a cellmate.

"We are devastated by this loss of life," the county said in a statement.

The sheriff's department and Richland County Coroner's Office haven't released additional details regarding the detainee's cause or manner of death as both agencies investigate the incident.
