BMW invests $200 million to expand South Carolina facility, create 200 new jobs

Auto manufacturer to construct press shop for making auto parts for new BMW models

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Upscale car manufacturer BMW announced it will invest $200 million to expand its footprint at its Spartanburg facility, creating 200 new jobs in the process.

The company plans to build a new 219,000-square-foot press shop that will produce stamped sheet metal parts -- such as doors, fenders, exterior body side panels, and lift gates -- from raw coils of steel. The component parts will be used in manufacturing future BMW models.

The new Spartanburg press line is scheduled to start production in the summer of 2024 and will consist of five stamping stations equipped with robotic (servo) technology in order to increase production.

Throughout the company's Upstate operations, BMW produces five top-selling BMW X models, four Motorsport X models, and two plug-in hybrid electric vehicle X models, and can produce more than 1,500 vehicles each day.
