Gov. Haley Concerned About Chinese Tire Tariff

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) - Gov. Nikki Haley wants the U.S. Commerce Department to lower a tariff on tires made in China by Giti Tire, which is planning a $560 million plant in South Carolina.

The Herald of Rock Hill reports (http://bit.ly/1GZkR9j ) that the governor wrote a letter to the federal agency this week saying the nearly 18 percent tariff "inequitably affects Giti's business."

The tariffs were imposed this month, but a decision on the final rate will be made in April. The government is imposing the tariffs to offset subsides the Chinese government gives manufacturers.

Chester County Economic Development Director Karlisa Parker says Giti has indicated the tariff won't its change plans to build the new plant in the county near Interstate 77. The plant is expected to employ 1,700 workers.
