HOUSTON — Giant jackpots in Powerball and Mega Millions always get a lot of attention with millions buying tickets in hopes of scoring easy money.

If you hope to win a jackpot, some numbers might be luckier than others, according to research from JustGamblers.

Their "online gambling experts" analyzed the numbers picked in all previous draws to determine the luckiest and unluckiest. Along with Powerball and Mega Millions, they included The Big Game, the original name for Mega Millions, Lucky for Life, played in 22 states but not Texas, and Hot Lotto, which was discontinued in 2017.

  • Forty-six came next at 139.4 times
  • Forty-three follows with an average of 148.4
  • Forty-one was fourth at 153.2 times
  • And 44 ranked fifth at 153.6 times

"The selection of lottery numbers relies on a randomized algorithm, which is used to select numbers in an unpredictable way," JustGamblers co-founder Magnus Boberg said. "With that said, it is fascinating to see such a clear pattern in the top five unluckiest numbers, with all of them being in the 40s."
