Coroner identifies victim in deadly shooting off West Beltline Boulevard early Saturday morning

Authorities said the shooting happened at Colony Apartments around 1:30 a.m.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — While Columbia Police continue to investigate a deadly shooting that happened early Saturday morning off West Beltline Boulevard, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford has released the name of the 23-year-old victim.

Officers initially responded around 1:30 a.m. to Colony Apartments after receiving a "ShotSpotter" alert -- part of a special system that detects gunfire and estimates its location.  Officers said the victim, identified as Marquicas D. Taylor, died at an area hospital. 

Police haven't released details regarding the motive for the shooting or who was responsible but said the Violent Crimes Against Persons Unit is investigating and following "promising leads" in the overnight shooting. Officers also collected ballistic evidence from the scene.
