Coroner identifies man killed in Newberry shooting

Authorities said the suspect turned himself in a short time after the shooting.

NEWBERRY, S.C. — Newberry authorities and state agents are investigating a deadly shooting that happened Wednesday night.

The Newberry Police Department said officers responded to Wise Street near Benedict Street around 9:20 p.m. Officers found a victim, identified by the Newberry County Coroner's Office as 35-year-old Corey Wadsworth, with a gunshot wound. The coroner's office said Wadsworth was taken to Newberry County Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

Police said Keeman Aljamek Bates turned himself in shortly after the shooting. Bates faces charges of murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, breach of peace of a high and aggravated nature, unlawful carry of a pistol and possession of a pistol by a prohibited person.

Investigators do not believe there is any danger to the public and described the shooting as an isolated incident.

Police said Bates is in the Newberry County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing. 

The department asked anyone with information about the shooting to call them or contact Midlands Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC or CrimeSC.com.

The investigation is currently being conducted by the coroner's office, police department and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
