Coroner identifies man who died in Clarendon County crash while allegedly trying to escape law enforcement

The crash happened late Saturday night.

CLARENDON COUNTY, S.C. — A driver has died after authorities say he tried to escape law enforcement and wrecked in Clarendon County.

Master Trooper Gary Miller with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened just before midnight on Saturday in the area of Luke Godwin and Washington Davis roads. Trooper Miller said a 2005 Honda Accord was heading south on Luke Godwin Road when it went off the left side of the road and hit a ditch before overturning.

Miller said the driver, later identified by the Clarendon County Coroner's Office as 33-year-old Tonnie Leon Lawson Jr. of Summerton, was the only passenger in the vehicle and died in the crash. Authorities said Lawson was attempting to elude law enforcement at the time of the crash.
