Man killed in Newberry shooting identified; 2 others also wounded, coroner says

One was taken to Prisma Health Richland Hospital, and another was treated at the scene. The third person died.

NEWBERRY, S.C. — Newberry Police are investigating a shooting that left two wounded and one dead on Saturday night.

Speaking on behalf of her office and the Newberry Police Department, Coroner Laura Kneece said the shooting happened around 9:20 p.m. in the area of Emory and Hunt streets. Kneece said officers arrived at the scene and found three people with gunshot wounds. 

One was taken to Prisma Health Richland Hospital, and another was treated at the scene. A third victim, who Kneece identified as 53-year-old Troy Leonard Sims, died at the scene.

The Newberry Police Department, Newberry County Coroner's Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) are investigating the shooting.

Police urge anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
