Family dispute in Newberry ends in deadly shooting; victim identified

Authorities described the incident as domestic violence and said there is know known threat to the general public.

NEWBERRY, S.C. — NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Multiple agencies are investigating a deadly shooting that happened in Newberry on Sunday morning.

In a joint statement, Newberry Police Chief Kevin Goodman and Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece announced the death of 24-year-old Diamond Kennedy.

Authorities said in the statement that officers were called to Nance Forest around 2:48 a.m. to a shooting that stemmed from a family dispute. However, officials said Kennedy died at the scene. Police said the other party in the shooting, who hadn't been identified, was taken to Newberry County Memorial Hospital and was "bleeding profusely from the face [and] mouth area."

Police are investigating the incident as a case of domestic violence and don't believe there is an immediate danger to the public. They're asking anyone with information about the incident to call Midlands Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC or the Newberry Police Department.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is also involved in the investigation.
