'Boom! Crash!' Richland County couple awakened as SUV crashes into home following chase

No law enforcement agency has confirmed its involvement.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Ring security camera caught the terrifying moment a car slammed into the front porch of a home in Richland County.

The homeowners spoke about the crash and the damage it left behind.

“Boom! Crash! It was loud; the whole house rumbled,” Sharon Johnson said.

On Tuesday around midnight, Sharon and William Johnson said they were sleeping in their home in the Columbia area when the explosive sound woke them up. They went outside to see what caused it and were shocked by what they found.

“It was a big 'ole SUV stuck up under the porch,” William said.

Not only did the car slam into the porch, but it also sent part of their mailbox through the front window.

“The mailbox, the whole front porch, my car, his car is running,” Sharon said.

Pewe Whitaker, with Whitaker Construction and Installation, was hired to demolish what was left.

“Structure, the structure was barely hanging," Whitaker said. "You can see with the new wood hanging up; it was free-falling, floating, so it was pretty dangerous."

The Johnsons said they feel incomplete without their porch.

“That front porch is part of your sanctuary; now you get up, this doesn’t even feel like my home,” Sharon said.

Crews finished the demolition on the porch. The next step is for insurance to come out and evaluate the damage and determine repair costs.

In the Ring video, the driver was being followed by law enforcement but, at the time of this report, no agency has confirmed that its officer or deputy was involved. However, the Columbia Police Department said this was not their case.
