South Carolina woman arrested for death of bicyclist, leaving the scene

The crash happened on April 3 and left a bicyclist dead.

COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. — A Walterboro woman has been arrested in connection with a deadly hit-and-run that happened earlier in the month.

Lance Corporal Nick Pye with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened on April 3 along S.C. 64 near the Williams section of Colleton County. Authorities said a vehicle hit a bicyclist and killed them. The driver left the scene.

Investigators later determined that the vehicle in question was a 2017 Nissan SUV and identified the driver as 34-year-old Jessica Dawn Simpson of Walterboro.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol announced on Saturday that Simpson had been arrested and charged with hit-and-run involving a death and booked into the Colleton County jail pending a bond hearing. Trooper Pye said the South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.
