Sumter man injured in shooting that struck car, several homes

The shooting happened early Monday afternoon in the Shannon, Red & White streets area of Sumter.

SUMTER, S.C. — Police are investigating after a shooting on Easter Monday injured one and struck several homes in Sumter.  

Authorities say both Sumter police and county deputies were dispatched to the Shannon, Red & White streets area after gunfire was heard around 12:30 p.m. Monday. 

A vehicle that was shot was found parked near the Shannon and Red & White streets intersection. Inside, the 22-year-old driver was found with multiple gunshot wounds. 

The victim was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey and transferred to a Columbia hospital. There's no word on the man's condition as of 5:30 pm Monday.

Officers say they also found at least four area houses, three of which were occupied, that were struck by gunfire. No injuries were reported.

Investigators say they are working to gather information that can help identify the shooter or shooters and determine what led to the incident.
