Teen charged in deadly Washington Street shooting in Columbia; victim identified

The victim died days later on Tuesday.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A 19-year-old has been arrested and charged in the murder of a man who was shot on Washington Street a week earlier.

Columbia Police said Jared Sammir Villanueva Ramos was arrested on Wednesday and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Investigators said they believe Ramos was responsible for a shooting that happened in the 1500 block of Washington Street on Jan. 31. Authorities said the victim, 57-year-old Carolos Manuel Estrada, died at an area hospital on Feb. 6.

Police said they believe Ramos shot Estrada following an argument at a home on the street.

Columbia Police said they later learned that Ramos entered the country illegally a year earlier from Honduras and, as such, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is assisting in the investigation.

Ramos is currently being housed in the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
