Both suspects are charged with child abuse

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — Sumter County authorities have arrested two people in connection to the severe injury of a small child.

According to a statement released on Thursday by the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, 19-year-old Jeffery Mason Browder and 22-year-old Tristen Cheyenne Gladden, both of Sumter, have both been arrested and charged with abuse, great bodily injury upon a child, for an incident that occurred in early February.

Investigators believe that on or around Feb. 3, Browder and Gladden "placed a child at unreasonable risk of harm" which led to six fractured bones in the unidentified six-week-old baby.

Browder and Gladden have since been taken to the Sumter County Detention Center and released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond. Meanwhile, the South Carolina Department of Social Services "to ensure the child receives the comfort and care it needs."

Authorities haven't said what may have led to the child's injuries but said that the suspects had legal custody.
