Cause of death revealed of person found wrapped in tarp in Sumter County woods

The coroner's office released a list of tattoos the man had on his body in an effort to identify him.

SUMTER, S.C. — The Sumter County Coroner has revealed the cause of death of a man found dead and wrapped in a tarp in the woods. Investigators are disclosing information to the public that they hope will help identify who the person is and who might have killed him.

The Sumter County Coroner's Office released the autopsy results on the body found on Nov. 26 by a group of hunters on Cimmaron Road. Coroner Robbie Baker said the autopsy, done at the Medical University of South Carolina, showed the person died of multiple gunshot wounds.

The autopsy determined that the body was an adult African-American male between the ages of 18 and 45 years old with a slim build. The person was about 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighed between 117 and 150 pounds. The coroner said the person had a short or balding hairstyle with short facial hair.

Investigators said he had some dental work done, including a silver metal crown on one tooth and fillings in others.

The person also had the following tattoos, according to the coroner:

"MURKCITY" on the upper right chest with a skull design under it

A lion's head on the upper left chest

Left arm with the phrase believed to say "INHALE THE FUTURE, EXHALE THE PAST."

The coroner says the upper arm has a star design and another design that is not legible, which appears to continue down the right forearm.

Baker said the body was uncovered around 10 a.m., about 30 feet off Cimmaron Road near the Rembert and Pisgah communities. He said a group of hunters noticed a smell and, upon finding the tarp, pulled it back. Baker said they concluded that something in the tarp was dead and called law enforcement.

Anyone who believes they may know the person's identity is urged to contact the Sumter County Coroner's Office at 803-436-2111 or the Sumter County Sheriff's Office at 803.346.2000.
