Vacant building in northeast Columbia goes up in flames

Officials say the building, previously a New Life Fitness Center, had been vacant for some time.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A vacant building in northeast Columbia went up in flames on Thursday evening.

Crews with the Columbia-Richland Fire Department responded to a fire at a previous location of New Life Fitness Center off Hardscrabble Road around 8 p.m. 

Crews encountered heavy fire on the first floor and extending to the second floor when they arrived on scene. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control and stop it spreading any further. 

No injuries were reported.

Officials say the building had been vacant for some time.

The Richland County Fire Marshal's Office will be investigating cause.
