Columbia, SC (WLTX) — Former South Carolina state Senator Robert "Wes" Hayes has been named the next Chairman of the Commission on Higher Education by Gov. Henry McMaster, on Nov. 30.

Hayes represented District 15 -- covering the area around Rock Hill, Lake Wylie and Fort Mill -- in the SC Senate from 1991 to 2016. During his tenure, Hayes was a member of the Senate Education and Finance Committees.

Hayes earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point, and graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1983.

McMaster said that "Wes Hayes has served the state of South Carolina admirably for years, and, with his decades-long focus on education as a member of the General Assembly, he is the perfect person to lead the Commission on Higher Education ass the agency continues its bold advocacy on behalf of South Carolina students."

Hayes replaces Tim Hofferth who stepped down in October over a question of finances.
