Honoring Our Military At Fort Jackson National Cemetery

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Volunteers from throughout the southeast met at Fort Jackson National Cemetery Friday to honor those who served in our nation's military.

"Memorial Day is the time that we do things like this, that we remember those that fought and died for us and those that just served. Not everybody that is buried here is a war casualty, but everybody that is buried here did serve," Jerry Schulte said.

With close to 6000 flags, Jerry Schulte of the American Legion and more than 30 volunteers placed one flag in front of every grave stone.

"This is where our dad asked us to buried him," Lisa Stokes said.

Stokes and her mother Jean came from Atlanta to visit their hero, John Russell Stokes Sr.

"He was a very proud person. My daddy was a true American," Lisa said.

Jean said when she is reunited with her husband, she will also be buried on site.

"It's important that we honor people who help keep us free and that's why I think all of these people are out here," Lisa said.
