Orangeburg utility company makes switch, to buy its power from Duke

The company has only bought its power from one company since it was founded in 1927.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — The Orangeburg Department of Public Utilities will buy its power from Duke Energy going forward, the first time they've ever changed who they get their customer's energy from.

The company announced on social media Tuesday that they'd entered into an agreement to make Duke Power its energy supplier. The change has been in effect since Monday.

"We believe we have provided our customers with the mandate given to us by our City Council; safety, reliability and cost effective power," the company said in a statement.

Orangeburg DPU was founded in 1927 and has only had one provider, currently known as Dominion Energy but previously known as SCE&G and before that, Broad River Power.

In the comments under one of their social media posts about the move, a person asked if their rates would be going up due to the move. The company responded by saying, "our goal was to pick a provider that offered our customers the best possible pricing. It took us two years, but we believe we have accomplished our goal. Remember, your power is a direct pass through. In other words, what they charge us, is what we charge you. The only profit we make is on the delivery portion. This was increased in October having not been raised since 2019."
