'It's mind blowing': Holly Hill man working to address litter issues in the community

Resident Spencer Griffin goes out for his daily walk and picks up trash along the way. But over the past year, he's noticed there's been more trash than usual.

HOLLY HILL, S.C. — Holly Hill resident Spencer Griffin says trash in town has been piling up and he's taken on the responsibility of cleaning up the mess.

“It’s mind blowing," said Griffin, “You know, Holly Hill can just be such a great town, and I take great pride in it. And I just see someone trashing the town ... I just feel like they’re trashing my yard or my backyard."

It's a project he's been working on for the past eight years. It's become part of his routine. He goes out for his daily walk and picks up trash along the way. But over the past year, he's noticed there's been more trash than usual.

“With all of these communities that are coming in around here now, Holly Hill is getting ready to explode, and if this is something that we don’t jump on right now, it’s gonna be terrible in a couple years and so the time to start is right now," said Griffin.

Now he's working to organize a group of people to help cover more ground and keep the community clean. The group would talk to youth about the importance of not littering. They would also seek out grant funding for supplies like trash bags and grabbers.

“It’s just the start of something if we start it out small and just bring awareness to it then it’s like planting a seed and it’ll just grow and everyone will start doing it, we’ll have a great town," said Griffin.
