KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities confirmed that a Kershaw County teen has died following a boating accident on the Wateree River.

According to Kershaw County Coroner David West, the crash occurred around 10:15 p.m. and involved two boats. West said the people on both boats were friends and they were brush fishing at the time.

West said both boats were moving when one hit the other near Pine Tree Creek and the victim, a 15-year-old Camden High School student, died. West did not release the name of the victim because he was a minor.

West said there was no foul play suspected and an autopsy is scheduled for Monday in Newberry County. He added that the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is handling the investigation.

A spokesperson for the agency confirmed that it is investigating the crash and asked anyone with information to contact the SCDNR.

He also encouraged those who plan to go boating to take a boating education course and always be vigilant while on the water.
