Students react after man reportedly tried to run person over on SC State University campus

Questions are being asked after an officer involved shooting on campus at SC State on Friday.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has been called to investigate Friday’s shooting on the South Carolina State University campus.

SLED says on Friday, SC State University police tried to stop a man from driving on to campus, and he was chased by officers to Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.

According to an arrest warrant, 27-year-old Tyrik Pressley, III, of Nesmith, failed to stop for blue lights and sirens, and then tried to run someone over with his car while pointing his gun at them.

SLED says an officer shot at Pressley's car. Pressley was hurt, but it is unclear if it was from the gunshot or not.

Pressley is being charged with attempted murder and failure to stop for blue lights.

Freshman Malia Hope said she was walking on campus and saw the chase.

“I was actually a little taken a back. Wow," Hope said. "Like, if we was like five seconds behind, we would have gotten hit by a car, honestly.”

SC State student Amir Woodson said that SC State gets a bad rep for incidents like these.

“Trouble is easy to get into but hard to get out of. If you are out here starting trouble, you got to know what comes with that," Woodson said. "We already get so much hate and shade thrown at our name at this school. I’s crazy that we got to go through that but it is what it is. Like I said, if you’re at the wrong place, wrong time, it gets wicked, but if you stay out the way you might see another day.”

SC State freshman Nya Nelson said she sees lots of speeding cars on campus.

“I’m thinking if they put, like, more speed limits up, and that would help out a lot," Nelson said. "And it’s not like they don’t have them, they have them people just ignore them because they’re not in a visible spot.”

No officers were injured and Pressley was transported to the hospital for treatment. Pressley is charged by South Carolina State University Police with attempted murder, failure to stop for a blue light, no injury or death first offense.

The investigation is still ongoing.
