One dead in Friday evening head-on crash in Newberry

Authorities said a pickup truck crossed the center line and struck a tractor-trailer. The crash also injured the other driver.

NEWBERRY, S.C. — Authorities say one person is dead after a crash in Newberry County that happened late Friday.

According to Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened on S.C. Route 39 near Brannon Road - roughly one mile from Chappells - around 8:40 p.m.

Ridgeway said that a 68-year-old driver from Cross Hill in a 2018 Ford pickup was heading north on S.C. Route 39 when the driver crossed the center line and hit a 2018 Freightliner tractor-trailer head-on.

The driver of the Freightliner, who is from Lexington, was injured and taken to Newberry Hospital for treatment. The driver of the Ford was also taken to the hospital but died of injuries sustained in the crash.
