Midlands under marginal risk of severe weather on Memorial Day

The holiday known for kicking off the summer season will welcome summertime heat

COLUMBIA, S.C. — As many head to the beach, pools, or lakes, they should pack sunscreen and prepare for summertime storms and heat.

A frontal boundary is expected to stall across the area, bringing chances for afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms through Sunday. Another more organized system is anticipated to cross the eastern United States on Monday and Tuesday, providing additional chances for thunderstorms. However, drier weather is expected to return by Wednesday.

On Sunday, the northern Midlands might see a greater chance of storms due to disturbances moving into the mid-Atlantic states. The atmosphere remains moist and unstable area-wide.

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed the entire Midlands under a marginal risk of severe weather on Memorial Day, with a slight risk over much of North Carolina.

The slight risk could extend southward in the next update, with damaging wind gusts being the primary concern.

A cold front will move across the region Monday night before stalling offshore on Tuesday, allowing dew points to drop into the 50s. Cooler and drier conditions will be on tap for the region midweek.
