Tree crashes into Columbia family's bedroom after strong storms; mom sent to hospital

A family of four woke up Wednesday to a tree crashing through their Columbia home. One woman was hospitalized. The others inside, including two children, are okay

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A family of four woke up to a tree crashing into their Columbia home after Wednesday morning's strong storms rolled in.

It happened Wednesday morning around 5 a.m. on Barhamville Road, which is just off Two Notch Road in the city.

According to the homeowner, two adults and two children were inside the home when the crash happened.

The mother was taken to the hospital for minor injuries and is fine according to the father.  The father and two children are not hurt.

The tree crashed into the master bedroom of the home, according to the homeowner.

The Red Cross will assess the damage to the home and help the family of four.

The incident happened as a way of strong storms moved through the area just before daybreak. The storm toppled several trees around the region, including on the historic Horseshoe on the campus of the University of South Carolina and along Millwood Avenue in Columbia. A severe thunderstorm warning had been issued when that storm cell came through.

There are also reports of trees down in multiple other counties.

The storm also knocked out power to the Richland County Administration Building on Hampton Street in Columbia, forcing the county to keep the building closed for the day while crews restored power.
