COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Democrat Rick Wade is dropping his bid for the South Carolina US Senate seat held by Republican Tim Scott.

Wade is a former U.S. Commerce Department official and member of former Gov. Jim Hodges' cabinet. He said Thursday there's not enough time to raise the money needed to mount a serious challenge to Scott in November.

Wade announced his candidacy in December.

Scott was appointed in December of 2012 to fill the unexpired term of U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint who resigned.

A special election in November will fill DeMint's final two years. Another election for the seat is set in November 2016.

Scott has no announced GOP opposition.

But Democratic Richland County Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson is running for the seat in November.
